British Values Statement
Promoting British Values
At Knowl Hill School, we fully acknowledge and support the government’s expectations regarding the promotion of fundamental British values as part of our wider SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural) responsibilities. We actively promote these core values—democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs—recognising that while they are described as “British values,” they are shared by many societies and cultures around the world.
We are committed to ensuring that these values are embedded throughout school life and are central to our curriculum, relationships, and school ethos. We believe that by promoting these values, we help prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain, equipping them with the knowledge, understanding, and respect needed to become responsible and engaged members of society.
The Five British Values are:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We use tutor and wellbeing time, assemblies, PSHE/RSHE lessons, and subject areas within the National Curriculum to explore and reinforce these fundamental principles. The following examples highlight just some of the many ways in which British Values are taught, modelled, and lived out at Knowl Hill School.
Democracy - Understanding the importance of voting and having a say in how things are run. Encouraging pupil voice and participation in decision-making.
The Rule of Law - Understanding the importance of laws in protecting individuals and communities. Respecting rules and laws both in school and wider society.
Individual Liberty - Promoting freedom of choice and the right to express views or beliefs. Supporting pupils to make informed, responsible choices.
Mutual Respect - Recognizing that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and understanding. Valuing differences and showing consideration for others.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs - Learning about and respecting the beliefs and practices of others. Encouraging understanding and acceptance of cultural and religious diversity.
