Residential Trips and Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning

A key part of Knowl Hill Schools curriculum is outdoor learning which we introduce through activities such as Forest School. Outdoor learning is included in both the lower and the senior school, enabling all students to become immersed in nature. As well as learning through Forest School, students get the opportunity to participate in residential trips including a residential experience at the Tile barn (Lower school), and a 3-day Bushcraft residential in North Yorkshire. The residential trips help students engage in new activities as well as developing their personal skills and making memories.

Forest School

Forest School is a timetabled curriculum subject, up to and including year 9. After year 9, students are given the choice as to whether they’d like to continue.

Forest School activities take place in a dedicated area at the Surrey Wildlife Trust and its surrounding woodland.

Within the Forest School program, students are able to develop an intuitive attitude to tasks such as risk assessments, which allow them to safely operate in the forest.  They will learn to work with a variety of tools as well as managing campfires. Other activities that they will participate in include:

  • Rope work
  • Making shelters
  • Creating objects such as swings and chairs
  • Teamwork exercises
