Maths
Maths is one of the three core subjects, meaning that it is a compulsory subject. Whilst maths can be intimidating to learn, at Knowl Hill School, we help to guide students through the subject, one step at a time, helping to build their understanding as well as their confidence.
Maths is a skill that is essential to everyday life. Therefore, a high-quality maths education is crucial for students as it helps to develop an understanding of the world, the ability to reason mathematically as well as making maths enjoyable.
Multi-sensory strategies used in maths include:
- Manipulation of fonts and colours on worksheets.
- Physical manipulatives e.g., using cubes and dienes.
- Visual Knowledge maps.
The courses we offer are made as visual and kinaesthetic as possible as well as using software and website that are dyslexia friendly. Even if students don’t want a career in maths, confidence with numbers is a great skill to have for everyday life.
AQA Mathematics - 8300
A maths GCSE shows that students have an understanding of numbers as well as the ability to work with them. In the AQA GCSE maths course students will build on the basics which they will have covered lower down in the school including learning to solve numerical problems and make calculations. They’ll learn about number systems and shapes and progress to algebraic equations, formulae, graphs and functions. Students will also learn to collect and assess mathematical data and use it to solve specific problems.
AQA GCSE Statistics - 8382
Students studying for GCSE Mathematics will be given the opportunity to broaden their knowledge in a key component of maths that is relevant in everyday life. They’ll develop a core statistical grounding, as well as transferable skills and understanding that’s applicable to a range of other subjects. It’ll also benefit students who wish to progress onto A-level subjects such as science, geography and psychology,
There is an expectation that students completing GCSE maths and statistics are required to complete regular homework tasks.
