Word Processors

Word Processors:

The use of a word processor is considered and agreed where appropriate at the start of the course. This means that any pupil using a word processor for exams should have this arrangement agreed by the end of year 10 at the latest (apart from exceptional circumstances).

Access arrangements are based on evidence gathered that firmly establishes the candidates’ needs and ‘normal way of working’ in the classroom, internal tests, exams, mock exams etc. and confirmed arrangements are in place before the candidate takes an exam or assessment. KHS will not simply grant the use of a word processor to a candidate because he/she prefers to type rather than write or can work faster on a keyboard, or because he/she uses a laptop at home.

The use of a word processor for candidates is only granted if it appropriate to their needs and reflects the support given to the candidate as their 'normal way of working', which is defined as support:

• in the classroom

• literacy support lessons

• in internal school test and mock examinations

• literacy intervention strategies

• working in small groups for reading and/or writing

• mock examinations

In the event of a temporary injury or impairment, or a diagnosis of a disability or manifestation of an impairment relating to an existing disability arising after the start of the course, access arrangements should be applied for as soon as is practicable.

Word processor during the exam:

• Each word processor will be charged and set up with an individual exam log in. This will not have access to the internet (unless required for specific exams).

• If required the laptop will be set up with a computer reader/speech to text software and WordPad without Spellcheck (unless authorised).

• Word processor will be connected to a printer with a personalised printer code so that the script can be printed off.

• The candidate must remain present to verify that the work printed is their own, they must sign each page once printed.

• A word-processed script is attached to the answer booklet which may also contain some of the answers. The front of the answer booklet must always be completed, even if the entire exam is typed.

• A word processor cover sheet, if required by the Awarding Body, is completed and included with the candidate’s typed script (according to the relevant awarding body’s instructions)

• After the exam, the examinations officer will save the pupils work to a USB and store securely until the results are released.
